It does make your hair soft. It does not make my hair any shinier or less frizzy; so while the hair feels very nice, it doesn't necessarily look like it's had $$$'s worth of treatment. A closer runner up to this in efficacy is Pantene's Daily Moisturizer Renewal, but the Pantene does smell quite strongly of something sweet (coconut? random chemical?), though it wins in the "makes hair shinier" category and loses a tiny bit in the "hair softer" category.
