Alicha is a mild lentil stew from the country of Ethiopia. It is made with a unique blend of herbs and spices. For this stew we partnered with Gemadi Bekuto, a former Ethiopian food truck owner, whose mission was to share his culture through delicious plant-based cuisine. Due to unfortunate events, Gemadi had to permanently close his food truck, but Country Life Natural Foods wanted him to continue his mission. Alicha is a must-try dish for anyone looking to experience the rich and diverse taste of Ethiopia.

(As a preface, I am not Ethiopian, though I live in a neighborhood with many Ethiopian immigrants and have made misir wot from scratch before.)This is extremely easy to make and yields many servings of lentils. For the price and effort, it's a great deal. The ingredients list is also relatively authentic and "clean" (no artificial preservatives or flavors). The berebere is not as flavorful as I've had, either at restaurants or from my local Ethiopian grocery store. Based on the ingredients, it seems like it's "simpler", with fewer spices. The onion flakes don't yield a rich sauce in the way that starting with fresh onion does. So it hits the high notes, but lacks depth. It's also barely spicy, so it could at least use more ground chili. Still, it's delicious and much less effort than making misir wot from scratch, and also much cheaper than buying from a restaurant.I plan to get more packs, but I'll probably supplement with more oil and extra berebere. I think it could be even better starting with fresh onions, though at that point I'd be almost making misir wot from scratch, defeating the purpose of a packaged food.
